Iain Finlay Macleod

Iain Finlay Macleod has written over twenty plays which have been performed professionally. His work has been shown in a number of countries – the US, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium and London. Some of his plays are Somersaults (National Theatre of Scotland), The Bends (RSAMD), The Pearlfisher, I was a Beautiful Day and Homers, (Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh). Iain Finlay also wrote St Kilda – The Opera, a large-scale multi-discipline theatre piece which was shown at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2009. This was also shown simultaneously in five different countries in 2008.
He has written a number of plays for Radio 4, among them “Mr Anwar’s Farewell to Stornoway” and ‘Frozen”. He has also worked as an adaptor of works for radio, screen and stage. He has published four novels in the Gaelic language. His writing is published by the Gaelic Books Council and by Nick Hern Books.
Iain has worked as a documentary and film director for the last fifteen years. He has worked as a director on teams which have won a BAFTA (Best Entertainment – Tacsi), as well as being nominated for three others for the film ‘The Innaccesible Pinnacle’. He has won other awards from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, and also Best Documentary (Murdo Macfarlane) at the Celtic Film & Television Festival. He also won Best Entertainment Programme (Tacsi) at the same Film Festival. Iain Finlay was Managing Director of ‘Zebo Productions’ for three years, a television production company based in Glasgow. He has series produced a number of large-scale productions.
Iain Finlay Macleod is currently working with the Masters degree class at RSAMD in Glasgow. He is a qualified teacher of the UK Film Council ‘Writers’ Factory’ course – which teaches writing theory, both for short films and feature films. He regularly works in schools delivering writing and media based workshops and classes.
Iain Finlay Macleod was the Robert Louis Stevenson Fellow for 2009-2010. He was writer-in-residence at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic College in Skye, for two years. He was also Associate Playwright at the Scottish Playwright’s Society for two years.
