I’m in Scalloway, on the west side of the island of Shetland. I’ve never been to Shetland before, and what I hoped for is true. The landscape is mystical and there are Shetland pony’s. The last one I was REALLY looking forward to. Horses with small legs, few things in life are cuter than that.
What I’m scared of is seasickness. The first crew has already been sailing on The Swan for about a week. It’s been hard to be in touch with them, as there hasn’t been a lot of Internet. What we did hear however, is that quite a few people were suffering from seasickness. the weather prediction for the next couple of days is rain and storm. Alarm bells for my equilibrium point. I also heard that the bunks are very small. I’m tall (I’m Dutch) and apparently 120 years ago the people were a lot smaller. This expedition already makes me feel like a city girl, and we haven’t even started.
Last night most of the second crew arrived, we had the most wonderful dinner (lamb) and I was talking to the Swiss artist Ursula Biemann. I had already spotted her work at the Maledive Pavilion at the Venice Biennale earlier this year and she told me about a new project she was developing, working in the Amazon. She mentioned she would be visiting a beautiful Fitzcarraldo like forrest.
Fitzcarraldo, the 1982 film by Werner Herzog, happens to be one of my favorite films, and suddenly I felt a strong link with where I am now.
There is a boat, and there’s a pretty exciting challenge.
Ps: he the link to a few words of Herzog on dreams:
Do you have a favorite film related to boats? I’ve been thinking about it and it almost always seems to be disaster films!
