Sandy Kerr
Joins the expedition for week 2
Dr Kerr is a lecturer at Heriot-Watt University’s International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT), based on the University’s Orkney campus. Sandy initially trained as an economist but for many years now has focussed his attention on the management of marine resources. His PhD examined the development process on small islands and their sustainability. This work involved cases studies in the Caribbean and the Galapagos as well as Scotland. Sandy’s current research interests are centred on the potential development of marine renewable energy, the changes that this will bring to the management of our seas, and associated impacts on coastal communities. In addition to research Sandy is responsible for managing three MSc programmes based at Heriot Watt University Orkney Campus. These programmes attract postgraduate students from around the world providing them with a unique learning experience. Sandy has lived in Orkney for 20 years which allows him to participate in a vibrant local community as well as maintaining an international research profile. Sandy is married with two children. In his spare time he enjoys running, competing in ultra-marathons, fishing and hill walking.
