Debora is a biological oceanographer working at the National Oceanography Centre of the University of Southampton. She is interested in the way the oceans respond to human perturbation and is currently researching the impact of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels on ocean PH; in particular, the effect of acidification on the life of marine animals and plants. The polar latitudes are the most susceptible of ecosystems as carbon dioxide dissolves more readily in colder waters. Debora is coordinator of a research team of scientists investigating the biological response of chalk-producing animals and plants to ocean acidification, and the negative influence of increasing acidity on healthy shell formation in certain organisms. During the Cape Farewell expedition she will measure the chemistry of what may be among the most corrosive waters in the world and investigate how this extreme chemistry affects the life of microscopic organisms.
