Activities for Schools

Here are some ideas for ways your school can take part and be involved during the Youth Expedition 14th – 23rd September. You will be making a difference!

  • During assemblies, form periods or in lessons use interactive white boards, data projectors or computer suites to visit this website, watch the latest video clips and look at the blogs from the Arctic. These could form the starting point for work or discussions around climate change.
  • Have a “Green Day” on the day your school participant student is live on the web from the Arctic.
  • Encourage every class to have a green theme to their lesson.
  • Encourage individual classes, years or the whole school to take part in the art, science and performance activities. See the group activities below for ideas.
  • During one of the days of the voyage, or during the whole week, base some curriculum work on climate change issues. See the subject based activities below for ideas.
  • Download this PDF with ideas on using the Cape Farewell Youth Expedition in your classroom. It was written by Jessica Burdett for Kidbrooke School, but be easily adapted for any school.

Group Activities

Take part in these if you can! There will be three group activities taking place during the voyage. If you are thinking of joining in we’d love to know. Use the comment boxes below to share who you are, where you are from and what you’re planning to do.

Art

Monday 17th September // from 12:00 GMT (13:00 UK time)
Dan Harvey is going to make a collective piece of art with all the students on the voyage during the afternoon of Monday 17th September. During that afternoon students in their art lessons can also do a collective piece of art that is related to climate change. Check back closer to Monday 17th for further details.

Movement/Dance

Tuesday 18th September // from 12:00 GMT (13:00 UK time)
On the afternoon of Tuesday 18th September Suba Subramaniam will be creating a group dance/movement piece. Students in PE or Dance lessons can take part in a big collective movement piece that unites all the schools in the Cape Farewell community – a performance inspired by climate change. Check back closer to Tuesday 18th for further details.

Science

Wednesday 19th September // from 8:00 GMT (9:00 UK time)
Professor Mark Maslin, the scientist on the voyage will be working with the students on board to conduct a 24 hour weather monitoring experiment on Wednesday 19th September. This data will be compared with historical data. Students in schools can do a similar experiment on the same day. Students can also get historical weather data from a local weather monitoring station. Check in closer to Wednesday 19th for further details.

Share your activities

We’d love to know about any activities your school takes part in. If you can, keep a record of what you do in video, digital pictures and lesson plans. If you have details of your activities to share, we can add them to a resource pack that maps all the activities that took part globally. These will become part of the Cape Farewell Youth Expedition BLUE PRINT and will be available for other schools to learn from by the end of the year. The Blue Print is being developed with Creative Partnerships in the UK and British Council in Canada and will feature the projects that the young people develop both at sea and within their schools. Please be a part of this and share your experiences with us!
